Body Mass Index (BMI) is one of the most accurate ways to determine when extra pounds translate into health risks. BMI is a measurement which takes into account a person's weight and height to gauge total body fat in adults. A BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese. The higher the BMI, the greater the risk of developing additional health problems.

Example:
Weight: 120 ft
height: 264 lb

bmi= 703 x (120/264)

BMI= 44.10 being greater than 30 is considered to be obese

An excess of subcutaneous fat in proportion to lean body mass.

Excess fat accumulation is associated with increased body size (hypertrophy) as well as and increase in the number of adipose tissue cells (hyperplasia).

Obesity is a major medical problem today.

TREATMENT:

Medical: For the treatment of overweight and obesity may recurr to diets, drugs, exercise, behavior modification supervised by a dietitian.

Surgery: Surgical procedures are applied in the treatment of obesity when medical treatment fails, bariatric surgery is an option for weight loss (bariatric surgeon).

Surgical options are:

* Gastric Band
* Gastric Sleeve
* Gastric Bypass

Bariatric surgery alone does not cure obesity since, after surgery, a proper diet plan to lose weight should be followed (supervised by a dietitian). The procedures that are currently handled in bariatric surgery allow a decrease in weight and an improvement of physical and psychological ailments.

Some factors that contribute to obesity are:

Eating disorders

Social Displacement

Hereditary

Hormonal disorders

Psychological

Culture

People with obesity are at risk of developing one or more serious medical conditions which can cause poor health and premature death. The following are some of them:

High blood pressure/heart disease

Dyslipidemia (lipid metabolism abnormalities)

Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)

Type 2 diabetes

Reproductive health

Gallbladder disease

Lower back and knee pain

Sleep apnea/respiratory problems
